training more than writing

have been going through a sort of writer's block. so have spent less time writing and much more time training.

today's workout: (a "circuit")

deadlift @ 350lbs for 3 reps
front squat @ 155 ibs for 5 reps
hand-stand push-ups for 7 reps

did 5 rounds of the circuit in 16:10.

the goal is 12 - 14 minutes . . .

let me begin by apologizing. i am frequently struck with the impulse to write dirty stories. i would keep them tucked away and hidden, if it wasn't for the editors in the small press picking them up and in a sense "enabling" me to continue with this abnormal process. one of those "enablers" is john hartness. he is the editor of a new zine called Red Dirt Review. the first issue is out, free online and printed copies are to follow that will sale thru john and lulu.com. he picked up one of my dirty stories called the phattest ass in cincinnati. you can give it a read here. again i apologize for the 965 dirty words that are to follow, but hopefully you are entertained or at least slightly amused . . .

that i will have a book forthcoming from Calliope Nerve Media. it'll be a collection of short stories and edited by Matt "Nobius" Evelsizer. it is in the very very beginning stages, so i'll provide more details as they develop. needless to say, i'm stoked and indebted to Matt for picking up the neurotic scribblings that pass for my stories.

and on a side note, my first poetry chapbook, american violence, should be out in april from New Polish Beat. A.J. Kaufmann did an amazing job with the editing. he took the chicken-scratch i supplied him with and turned it into a collection of poems!!! (imagine that)

All Beautiful Things Travel Alone

is the most recent book from poet Mike Meraz. I have just read the collection of 78 poems and it is some of the best poetry I've read in a while.
Mike writes with a palpable sense of honesty, mixed with vulnerability and insight. His words have a slickness to them, a bluesy coolness, yet they have a subtle weight that slowly seeps down and leaves a deep, full impression. Mike manages to get the poems down with a lot of soul and reflection, but avoids the pitfalls of "sappiness" and shallow emotionalism.
The poetic terrain Mike explores most in the book is loneliness, love, isolation, women, the act of writing, the redemptive quality of art, and the joys & sorrows of everyday living.
The collection as a whole is RIDICULOUSLY strong! But my favorite 3 poems out of the 78 total are:
"A Life Without Love" with lines like
a life without love/ not many friends/ my family sticks by me/ but family love only goes so far/ this is the meat and potatoes of love/ but meat and potatoes is boring/ I want gourmet with fine wine/ with all the trimmings/ I want dessert . . .
and "Wisdom Exists On Kitchen Counters" with lines like
wisdom exists in grocery store backrooms/ while your co-worker pushes a pallet-jack and says/ pretty ain't nothen' but a headache . .
and "How You Know When You Are A Writer" with lines like
there is a 160lb Brazilian girl laying next to you/ with little on/ telling you how much she cares about you/ while at the same time/ in your head/ you are working on your latest sonnet . . .
I really can't adequately convey how good Mike's book really is. All I can really say is that fundamentally it is a really really good book and I wish I could write poems like this. But I can't, so I don't try. I just read Mike. You should read Mike Meraz too! And you can get the book here.
Now go and get All Beautiful Things Travel Alone !!!!!!
It's gunna' have more substance than most of the crap you'd otherwise spend your money on.
